Wire rope is a necessity in the rigging world; put plainly, they keep everyone safe. That is why it is so important to get the right one for your specific needs.

Wire rope is one of the rigging supplies that cannot be ignored. These sturdy pieces of equipment are what keeps you, your cargo and everyone around as safe as possible.

When determining which wire rope will suit your needs the best, you must look at a few things: the wire's diameter, the core material, the grade of steel, the finish on the wire, the direction of the stranding and closing, and how many strands the rope is made from. Since each aspect of the rope can be explained pretty detailed, I don't think I'll have enough room here, so I'll just target the wire's diameter and the core material.

The diameter of a rope should be measured at the widest point, wherever that may be; of course, that should obviously be the middle. This is going to play an important role in determining how well the rope will hold up to pressure as well as its flexibility. The core of your wire rope can either be a fiber core (FC) or an independent wire rope core (IWRC), this is an aspect of the rope that is very important. A fiber core is often made of synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, or vegetable fibers such as sisal. When you are trying to figure out the practical differences between the two, IWRCs have a much higher resistance to crushing and such, and they are more supportive to the outer strands that their FC counterparts. Other differences include an increase in the rope's strength, an increase in heat resistance and the amount of stretch the rope has is reduced greatly.

Now, as I said, these are only two aspects of a wire rope that you need to look at prior to purchasing. The others play an important role in determining which wire rope is best for your needs as well. So make sure you read everything on the label before you buy your next, or first, wire rope.
